Rustic Chic Antlers

So, before we were married a million years ago (okay, almost 28 years ago), I made a few "rules" or deals with my hubby.  One of those involved dead animals.  You see, he is a hunter and at the time and for several years after, I could never imagine wanting skulls or antlers or anything of the sort in my home.

The deal was--all dead animals belong in the garage.

Needless to say, hubby was amused the other day when he saw what I was hanging in our great room--shed antlers that my son found on a hike.

And to be honest, I am still trying to figure out how antlers fit into my style, which appears more and more to be quite eclectic. Today I am calling my style farmhouse, industrial, rustic, boho chic.  I am sure that is a thing!

To make this I started with a gorgeous piece of reclaimed wood.  This piece was all but falling apart so I glued all the nooks and crannies on the back and clamped it together.

I found the middle of the board

and taped it off and painted one half with Fusion Paint in Matthew Mead's Studio Metallic copper color  (I am so bad about keeping my paint containers clean!)

I am in love with this copper paint that I had to paint this little wood bowl too.

When the paint was dry I taped the copper side off and stained the wood side.

I attached the elk antler with copper plumber's tape.

I hung some keys from the antler--keys to the heart for Valentine's Day.

The copper paint, the beauty of the natural wood,

and the rustic antlers make me smile.  Whatever my style is, this speaks to me and is worth breaking the "marriage contract"!

  1. Your post really hit home. I feel the same way about dead animals. My husband is not a hunter but we have many family and friends who are and proudly display their trophies but it was never for me and I've made that clear to my husband also. We live on a farm and my husband told me how he found some antlers laying near our woods. I ask him if he brought them home and the look on his face was priceless. I think his response was, really you want those? Sure enough he went back out and got them for me. I haven't found a spot for them yet but I plan too. Yours look great. Very creative use of them.

  2. I don't mind deer heads, but I put my foot down when a pheasant and a nasty looking fish tried to make their way into my living room.. My hubby won't let me hang anything on the antlers though, the crystal prisms were cool, but he didn't like it... LOL

  3. Great rustic idea! I grew up on 600 acres and there were lots of deer so antlers were found often!
