Don't Go Breaking My Heart--How to Update an Outdated Bench

Oh, but I did break the heart, or at least hide it.  Some neighbors I don't even know who live down the street brought me this a few months back.

They said they were going to throw it out and then thought of that lady down the street who always works outside :).   I added a wood thingy I had over the heart--glued it andused some wood fill around it where the heart was still peeking out.

I then painted and distressed the bench and added a piece of beadboard that was brown to start.  Be gone 80's country look!

  2. Cool! I have a wooden wastebasket designed to hold plastic shopping bags for liners. It has heart cutouts that I didn't know what to do with. Now I do thanks to you!

  3. Nice neighbours. They may want it back if they see it now! I have a little bench with the heart cutouts and I bought 4 wood rosettes to cover the hearts but they are too small. I will have to check again and see if your wood filler trick will work.

  8. Wow, love how you changed out the heart. I see a ton of shelves and stands that have that heart cutout and I always leave them because I just can't handle the heart. I might have to be brave and buy one and try your idea of covering it. Thanks.

  15. Love it! I picked up something similar but more like a stool at a yard sale last week with the same heart cut out. Yuck. Now I know how to revamp it. Thanks heaps! x Julie
