Trunk Transformation--Saving an Old Trunk With Paint

I have a furniture fairy.  Yes, my own personal fairy who silently and secretly leaves furniture on my front porch.  The latest gift?  This dilapidated trunk.

It is what I am deeming "vintage"--definitely not antique, but also not purchased at Walmart in the past 10 years.  My guess is it is from the sixties.  And as you can see, it wasn't in the best shape, but salvageable.

I started by cleaning the inside.  It wasn't too horrible--some trunks are not worth keeping because they are so bad inside.  I used some bleach water on all of it first in case there were any mouse droppings in there, we junkers need to be watchful of hantavirus.  I then painted the inside with a white latex paint.  I hot glued the cracks on the one end as best as I could.

I then used General Finishes' milk paint in Seagull Gray on the outside of the trunk.  I had "cleaned" my brush of the white paint on the outside, i.e. I wiped all the excess paint off on the trunk.

I added a leather belt piece where the missing handle was and then finished the paint with General Finishes' High Performance Polyurethane.  It makes a great coffee table, a great place for storage, and I am happy I was able to save it.  Thank you furniture fairy!

    1. Hey Becky, I don't mean to sound out of the loop ignorent but I guess on some of that I really am. Can someone tell me or explain to me what the furniture fairy is and what it does?we have a whole storage unit 8 by 10 or larger full of furniture pieces and some antique pieces, that are for our store in Blairsville Georgia, which is called Shabby Chanelle's.I am always looking for new innovative ideas to repurpose or recycle the unique pieces that we have. we are looking for word to getting the project completed by the end of March for shabby chanels. So if you have color pieces or color samples or suggestion that we can use or tell me more about the furniture fairy I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Linda Gay.
