Project 5 is mostly about this fun and useful crate ottoman, but I also will share a few other components of my porch sitting area.
To make the crate, I started making a box with some reclaimed barnwood.
After making the box sides, I added a plywood bottom.
Handles were screwed into the sides and I painted it with a sparse coat of white.
I made a top with two pieces of plywood joined with boards that fit snuggly inside the crate.
I covered the lid with a pillow and some fabric sprayed with Scotch Guard.
I am still going to add casters to it, but the hardware store was closed by the time I made it by there. Casters will make pulling it out to rest our feet like sweet daughter is doing here much easier.
I wanted this ottoman for some storage, we are keeping porch blankets in it, but also I knew I needed a little something under this "table" --which is really a desk that opens up. I painted it to use it for a table because the size was right.
I couldn't find a rug that I liked at a price I liked so I bought these carpet squares at Dollar Tree.
I painted them with acrylic painted that I added fabric medium to and duct taped them together to make a rug for less than $20. Hint--if you try this--the squares soak up a lot of paint--about 2 bottles of craft paint per square. They are soft, not crunchy thanks to the fabric medium.
I still need to recover the cushions for the chairs and the loveseat and I have a little more accessorising to do--I will share the full reveal next week sometime. With all of my new projects, my small porch truly has become the outdoor "room" I have always wanted and I know we will spend many hours enjoying it this summer.
Tune in tomorrow at noon MST for a link party so I can see what YOU have been working on AND a small giveaway.

Love your painted squares idea! and the ottoman is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI must confess. I do wait, but with bated breath, not baited breath, lest I attract an undesirable varmint of some kind! Lol. Please tell me Becky what is fabric medium & where do you get it? Thanks for another great tutorial. BTW, did you hinge the lid on the ottoman or not?
ReplyDeleteYour desk/table gave me huge inspiration this morning... I painted a table I found all white and it just wasn't working for me until I saw this... Now I painted the top duck egg blue and it looks awesome!! Thanks for the inspiration!

you are so creative! I was just at Dollar Tree yesterday and saw similar carpet squares but wasn't in love with the gray. Totally love how you brightened up the squares! And your ottoman is adorable! Beautiful fabric!
