Colorful DIY Frame from Thrift Store Checker Board

Thrifty Thursdays at Beyond the Picket Fence

Today's Thrifty Thursday project is a bit funky, a bit boho, colorful and I am kind of in love with the results. I wanted something that had layers of colors, but also wanted the checkerboard to peek out.

I started with a wood checker board. This was not great wood, nothing fabulous. I sanded it a bit before painting it.

I then slapped on some of my favorite "happy colors". I used some latex paint and some craft acrylic paint and some chalk paint. Let these colors dry before adding the final top color.

When it was completely dry, I painted red over all of it and then let this dry about 85% percent.
Hyde Paint Scraper
I then used my favorite paint scraper (affiliate link) The HYDE Painter's Tool HERE to scrape the red paint off. The more and harder you scrape, the more colors are revealed. I wanted to see some of the checkerboard underneath. I did sand a little paint off too to reveal a bit more of the checkerboard.

Next, take a piece of glass from a thrift store frame, I used a 5" x 7", but you can use a square piece. I placed it on the middle of the checker board and placed four small washers at the corners. I do not know the washer size because they weren't in their package. Pre-drill holes through the washers.

I found a great black and white photo of my grandpa on his horse.

I used a little double stick tape on the back and placed the photo in the middle of the board. Use two smaller washers to lift up the one larger fender washer that is on top. I screwed in the lower corner washers. I then put the glass in place and hand screwed the top two washers in place.

I like the smaller picture under the larger glass, the bright colors with the black and white photo.

I placed the frame on my great room window sills.
