I cannot believe it is almost the fourth of July. We have had so much rain, it hasn't really felt like summer yet. But, June is almost over, and it is time to decorate for Independence Day.
Using a rectangular scrap of plywood painted dark brown to make a distressed flag sign is a great place to start on your summer decorations.
I used a couple of wood blocks (approx 1 1/2" x 2 1/2") to paint the flag.
I painted the red stripes first, dipping the block into red craft paint and dragging it on the plywood to make a stripe.
When the red was completely dry, I painted the white stripes.
I used another block to paint the blue square. I chose a baby blue color instead of the typical darker flag blue because I was worried it wouldn't show up well against the dark brown background. I then painted one simple star on the blue field on the flag.
I did not sand the flag because red and white sanded make pink, but I did use Special Walnut colored Minwax stain over the flag when the paint was dry. A clear coat finished the flag. It adds a nice pop of color and will look great in any decor all summer long.
Please pin me!
Oh my gosh, Becky! This is such a great project. I done a lot of DIY things but I have never painted with a wood block before. It gives such a wonderful distressed look right off the bat. Thanks for sharing this with us. I saw your post over at "DIY By Design" blog party.
