Make It Monday Funky Boho Art in an Antique Frame

Make It Monday

I found a fantastic, antique frame for only $3 at the thrift store. I loved the wood and that it definitely isn't perfect, but it was almost too pretty and antique for my home and style. I decided to give it a funky, boho, organic, artsy look by adding some twigs and embroidery floss.

Now, if you are freaking out that I "ruined" an antique frame--no need to, everything I did is temporary. I love the juxtaposition of the old wood frame, the natural element with the branches, and the pop of color added with the embroidery floss.

Start with a great frame with no glass. It doesn't have to be an antique, just something you like, any size, any style. I collected branches from my yard. If you want a more modern, less organic look you could use skinny dowels cut to fit in the back of the frame. You also could chopsticks (I have been seeing these at the thrift store a lot), paint stirrers cut to the right size, or wire attached with small nails on the back of the frame.

I trimmed and hot glued the twigs, interwinding them, but trying to make them look a bit like trees. You could use a staple gun or small nails to attach the twigs or whatever you are using. This is what my framed twigs looked like before I added the embroidery floss. This is nice for a more simple, natural, and neutral look.

I wanted to add color to my funky, boho art piece and decided to use embroidery floss in a "loose" rainbow scheme. I slip knotted four strands of floss on the twig and then wrapped it around until I liked it and knotted it on the back.

You could use yarn or jute or colored wire or macrame cord. Pick colors that you like--monochrome is fun, black and white, all different shades of blue. This is YOUR art piece, make it something you will smile at when you look at it.

I have this hanging on my white kitchen door that leads to the mudroom. I like the wood and the pop of color next to the white.

But, I also hung it on the window near to my other rainbow art and colorful clock (SEE HERE).

Hmm...wherever I hang it I do love the unexpected "art" in the antique frame. It is colorful and natural, and makes me happy.
