Today's Furniture Flip may be favorite out of the FIVE that I have shared in the past week. It started out as fairly humble, homemade piece that I picked up for $5 at the thrift store. It is plywood, old, and has a few issues.
But, I saw the potential as a great storage bench in an entryway or as a console/TV stand. It would also work at the end of bed or under a window as a seat. Some paint and new hardware and she is flipped and freshened up, ready for a new home.

I removed the middle doors that flipped down to open. I thought they would work better as an open cubby for shoes or baskets.
I also removed the legs because they seemed a bit small for this piece. I have another shelf that I am going to use them on.
I also removed the knobs from the doors and then filled the holes (and yes, I use my fingers).
I lightly sanded the piece and then started by painting the inside cubbies. I painted them a light green. I didn't like it. So, I decided to paint them along with the whole bench a tan color. Don't be afraid to change your mind while flipping furniture. It adds a little time to y our flip, but go with your gut. The green is a lovely shade, but wasn't right for what I wanted to do with this.
After painting two coats of paint, I taped a diamond (or would you call it a triangle pattern?) on the door.
I painted the top and bottom section white.
Gold legs really elevate this bench, at least elevate in style (it is only a little taller than it was with the original legs). You can BUY THESE HERE.
I had different new knobs or handles in mind, but it wasn't going to work with the thinner plywood on the doors. Instead I used some vintage hardware that I took off a blanket chest several years ago. Save old, cool hardware in small ziplock bags with all of the parts and pieces for future use.
I added a bit more gold to the handles and to the hinges using Antique Gold Rub-n-Buff (get it HERE).
A clear coat of a brush on poly finished this makeover.
It is a great piece and has so much more life in it for someone. The outdated had been updated with paint and some time and new hardware and another piece of furniture has been saved.
