Today's Make it Monday project involved me learning right along with you as I had never made something like this before. The idea was born out of some necessity and some out of my desire to have more plants in my sunlit entryway. I started with a growler from the thrift store (or get one from your favorite brewery) and some macrame cord.
This is a perfect addition to my entryway and is a great place to start some citronella clippings that actually broke off while I was replanting my large citronella plant.
I started with the idea that I would remove the label on the growler and keep the bottle brown. You can use a wine bottle, a juice jug, whatever works for you. A lip of some type is helpful. I used 100% acetone to remove the painted label, it didn't work. I tried comet, a scouring pad, vinegar and baking soda, but nothing would take off the label. I then thought I would keep it as the 406 (the Montana zip code for the entire state) is cute and a popular decor item here. But, when I decided I wanted this in my entryway I chose to use Antique Gold Rub-n-Buff. You could spray the paint the bottle any color you choose. You could wrap it in jute or decoupage it. Whatever will work with your decor/

I dabbed the gold on the bottle with an old paintbrush. I knew it would take a couple coats to cover the writing on the bottle so I used the Rub-n-Buff there first. You can buy Rub-n-Buff HERE. I didn't completely cover every inch of the brown glass.
Using four 8 ft. lengths of macrame cord, I made the growler hanger. I folded one cord in half and then slip knotted the other three on it. Slip knot the ends of the cord you put the other three on through its folded end. You can use yarn, jute, embroidery floss, torn fabric strips.
Next, take a cord from each side-by-side knot and tie a square knot (right over left, left over right).
I eye-balled my spacing, it isn't perfect, but good enough. I tied another row or two until I had a big enough circle to cover the bottom of the bottle.
After I tied a knot, I tucked the ends of the cord that I just tied into the bottle top so I wouldn't get confused as to what I just tied.
When I got to the top, I tied the final knots extra tight and then cut the cord close to the knot. I then used just a little bit of hot glue to make sure each knot was secure. I used a 14" piece of cord and wrapped it around the bottle lip and around the knots and tied it tightly and knotted and trimmed the end. It is very secure. You can make this bottle neck tie as long as you want.I added small, beaded tassel to the growler handle. It could be tied around the bottle neck or anywhere on the macrame.
I love the extra touch of gold and green. The citronella cuttings are a bit wild. You could add cut flowers, fake flowers, sticks, a battery operated candle, or just hang it with nothing in it. I will be rescuing more growlers and making more of these! My entryway is warm and inviting, with life and plenty to look at.
