I am knee deep in Christmas projects--snowmen, signs, snowflakes, etc. BUT, I am trying to hold off sharing anymore Christmas with y'all until November (but I am not making any promises). Plus, I need more than Christmas decor items for an upcoming sale.
I couldn't decide what I wanted to build and then I spied a great slab of barnwood in the corner of the workshop. It is 10" x 24".

I decided it would make a perfect small bench or side table.

I cut two sides from a more narrow barnwood board. I cut them 17" long. I then cut two braces for the bottom shelf that were 8" long (the width of the side boards). I used a board across the bottom to line up the shelf braces and get them the same distance from the bottom. I secured the braces with two screws in each.

I painted the sides red before assembling the rest of the bench.

When the paint was dry, I attached the side to the bench top, drilling at an angle and using a board again to place the sides at the same distance from the ends of the bench top.
I cut two trapezoid shaped braces. These are so important to making the bench sturdy. Attach them on the underside, drilling at an angle.

The final step is screwing the bottom shelf to the shelf braces.

I sanded a bit of the red paint off and then used Early American stain over all of it.
