Island Dreaming

I am on day 4 of being home with a sick girl.  Thankfully, she is feeling a bit better--I am getting a pedicure right now from her :).  I am also dreaming of being on a beach, somewhere warm and sandy, sort of like this picture:

And I am also itching to build, but the garage is about at zero right now so I am stuck inside painting.  Which is good too, but I want to build something big like an island. Also, today on HGTV's Design on a Dime they were excited to make a kitchen island out of an old dresser for $400.  I thought, "Heck, I can make one for less than $25!"  But, until I get to do that, I thought I'd share a few islands I have made in the past.

I think this is the first one I made from an old folding, deck chair.

I made another one from the other chair.

I made this island from a roadside desk, an oil drip pan, and other elements.

This isn't really island but a fun kitchen piece I made for wine or other storage.  I made it from old bed part I found in an alley.

Upcycling Cheap

Can cheap be upcycled?  Is it worth it?  That is exactly what I did with this little table.

The base was from something nice originally, I am not sure what.  I bought just the base at a garage sale for $1.  It needed a top and I just happened to have the perfect thing--a cheap round MDF table top from my former late 80's decor.  You know, the tables with the screw on legs that I would cover with a lovely ruffled tablecloth?  But could I disguise the top enough to hide the cheap?  

I applied a very thick coat of Annie Sloan chalk paint in Provence, painting it in random directions.  When that was dry I painted a thin layer of Old Ochre.  I sanded this with an electric sander, using a fine grit paper.  The Old Ochre layers works down into the nooks and crannies created by the thick layer of paint.

Some wax finished the look and in my opinion, made something cheap (MDF!) look rich and old and lovely.

My dog wasn't so sure, but the person who bought it was :).

Book Hook

I have a bit of an obsession with vintage children's books.  Perhaps it stems from my years of teaching.  As a child, I loved to visit the library or the book mobile in the summer.  The smell of books, their fun covers,

wonderful vintage pictures,

I love it all.  But, alas I cannot keep them all (I may be trying to buy them all, though).  It was time for me to start using some of them for projects, the reason I have justified purchasing them in the first place.  I picked three with an animal theme to make this fun and colorful coat hook:

I screwed the books to a board,

sealed them with some clear sealer and added hooks,

Here is what the back looks like--I added an extra board--decided it needed a little more.

Hellooo, are you staying healthy?  We are so far, but flu is all around us here in Montana. Wash, wash, wash is my daily chant right now. Heart Strings

I took down my Christmas decorations more than a week ago, but I must admit I wasn't really ready to this year.  I loved the white theme I chose for the holidays and did not tire of it like I normally do.  So, I decided to continue it into my Valentine's Day decor.  Using some of the same vintage wool blanket that I made my tree skirt out of, I made a heart garland.

It is simple, and sweet.

I also made a cozy heart pillow,

with a little detail.

Yes, this creamy wool tugs at my heart strings and makes me smile.  What Valentine goodies are you working on?

Love Is Kind

A rustic heart is painted on some of my scrap wood.

I joined three pieces of painted scrap pieces I had and painted a white heart on them.

I added a little verse--Love is Kind and sanded and stained it.
