12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 11

On the eleventh day of Christmas Beyond The Picket Fence showed me... a Christmas card holder that is nifty!  Are you as ready as I am for the poor rhymes to be over?

For this quick project I used a coffee sack.  I chose one with a little green and red on it, but you also could use fabric, an old tablecloth, burlap you have stenciled.  I staple gunned it to the wood frame of a garage sale bulletin board (never pass on bulletin boards).  I then added some garden fencing to the front, bending it around the edges to secure it.

I curled up every other wire on the bottom for a hook (and yes, this too could hold stocking).

 And voila--Christmas card holder that can be used long after Christmas is over as a message center.

12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 10

On the tenth day of Christmas Beyond the Picket Fence showed me...a new place to hang a wreath.  I think I may be heading into just plain crazy here now, but this idea for a wreath holder (or stockings, again, if you add more hooks) popped into my head last night and I had to try it.  I know you have seen wreath holders before, but have you ever seen one that has ice skates as the "feet" or "braces"?

I started with 3 ice skates of similar size--I think 3 same sized skates would be easier and a few old wooden spindles (table leg" chair leg?--I am not sure).  The smaller spindle had a screw sticking out of the bottom, and the larger one had a hole in the top so it worked out nicely to join them.

I used some wax on the spindles to clean them up and then set to figuring out how to attach the skates.  I realized I needed some spacers so I used little wood blocks.

I hot glued the blocks to the skates and the spindle just to hold them in place for screwing them in (hot glue is my third hand).  I then drilled through the inside of the skates, using 2 screws for each skate.

I added the hook before attaching the two spindles because it is much easier to do that way.  I used a little wood glue and hot glue between the spindles and added a vintage glass ball ornament on top.

It turned out very sturdy and level--I am little shocked :).  This will go outside, but it is 5 degrees right now so an outside photo shoot wasn't sounding too lovely.

12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 9

On the ninth day of Christmas Beyond The Picket Fence showed me...another idea to hang my stocking.  Clipboards--I love 'em and thought, "Hey, make one into a stocking holder."

I painted them quickly, added a little ribbon and a hook (you will need a little piece of some scrap wood on the back to hold the hook).

Now, what to clip to the board?  How about a picture of whose stocking is hanging there?

Or a favorite Christmas card?  And what better place to leave your letter to Santa?  After Christmas these would be great in the kitchen for a dish towel and favorite recipe, or in the mud room for reminders and coats.

12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 8

Barely getting this one in today, another full day.  On the eighth day of Christmas Beyond the Picket Fence showed me..how to make a Christmas sign junkyyyy!

Step 1:  Collect junk (do it quickly if it it 7 degrees out and your junk is in the garage).

Step 2:  Pick out some old wood pieces--slap some paint on it if needed.

Step 3:  Play with junk and arrange it to spell out words.  Glue down with 2 part epoxy, use hot glue to secure while epoxy dries.

Winter Break

I needed a break from the 12 Days of Christmas Ideas (life is really crazy right now), but I promise to be back tomorrow with idea 7.  Until then thought I'd share a little Montana with you from my morning walk.  See you all tomorrow!

12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 7

On the seventh day of Christmas Beyond The Picket Fence showed me...a mirror and some pitchers (sorry, I have been working on a rhyme for 15 minutes, nothing is coming to me).  This idea started with this door from Pottery Barn:

I thought the pitchers were unique and fun but didn't want to hear them clinging and a clanging every time the door opened and shut.  I decided to start with their idea, but make it better (yes, I am declaring my idea better than Pottery Barn's).  

I started by collecting silver creamers/pitchers from the thrift store (I spent less than $10 on these).  I used a mirror I had on hand--adding a little brown over the black, scratched finish.  I love rustic jute with shiny things, so I used it instead of ribbon.  I taped the jute on the back of the mirror with packing tape and then added some little touches to each pitcher--rolled up Christmas sheet music, berries, greenery and a pine cone.

This is hanging above my fireplace and I love it already (yes, I just finished making it a few moments ago).

12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 6

On the sixth day of Christmas Beyond the Picket fence showed me...a wreath that is warm and fuzzzzzy!  Here is another quick and inexpensive idea--a sweater wreath.  I made this one for my friend's cabin.  

12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 5

On the fifth day of Christmas Beyond The Picket Fence showed me...a different place to hang a stocking (not the best rhyme tonight, sorry).  Oh, and before I forget, the Under $100 Linky Party will post as planned tomorrow evening, it will just also have my day 6 idea.
No fireplace?  Want somewhere different to hang a stocking?  How about a locker basket?

Hang it on a couple nails on the wall.  You could then use an S hook, a ribbon or curtain hooks like I did to hang your stockings.  You can read about the stockings here.
The possibilities from there are endless.  I added a bowl for cards and a few favorite Christmas books.  One of those is Tasha Tudor's Becky's Christmas.  The elementary school where I used to teach was discarding and the librarian knew I loved it so she gave it to me!

You could attach cards or Christmas photos with clothespins, hang Christmas ornaments or balls inside, add a candle (it is a metal basket).

 No locker basket?  Use a sturdy woven basket or a wood crate.  Get creative with it!  Find more great ideas at Funky Junk Interiors!

12 Days of Christmas Ideas--Day 4

On the fourth day of Christmas Beyond The Picket Fence showed us all...a shiny wreath made of Christmas balls.  A few years ago I showed you a fall wreath that I had added a silver plated platter to.

 

 I decided I wanted a Christmas wreath that also had a great reflective shine to it.  I know you have seen lots of Christmas ball wreaths--but the silver plated platter as the base is a twist I haven't seen.

I pulled out my box of Christmas balls.  I pick these up at garage sales and thrift stores--the ideas are endless.  See past thing I have done with them here and here.  Some of these are old vintage ones, but some just have that great patina from spending a Montana Christmas outdoors.

 There was no rhyme or reason--I just used a lot of hot glue and eyeballed it.  I will only use it indoors since the hot glue will not do well with the below zero temps.  Fun, shiny and made all from things I have on hand.
