I love having a fireplace mantel to decorate again. I like to keep it fairly simple and keep many of the same elements up throughout the year. I change small aspects seasonally. My winter mantel is clean and minimal, a nice change after Christmas.
I kept a wood bead garland and a rose hip garland from Christmas draped across the mantel. They will come down soon, but I do like the boho vibe they add.

I have wanted to try some watercolor painting so I bought some inexpensive watercolor (HERE) paints to play with. I love trying new things and creating a little something with my hands every day. This watercolor set is perfect for that.
I painted some different sized spots on a piece of watercolor paper, using three different colors.
When the spots were dry, I added abstract designs, pine branches, and cones to them with a fine lined black pen. I was inspired by some abstract watercolors I saw on Pinterest that sadly had no link to the original artist. My art isn't perfect at all, but I enjoyed creating it.
The watercolor painting adds a bit of simple color to the mantel.
A few pine cones complete the winter mantel. The wood card table, candlesticks, silver tray, and wood bobbins are part of the regular mantel decor. A white heart will probably make its way up there, propped in the silver tray.
Keeping most of my decor unchanged throughout the year and adding small, seasonal bits and pieces is so easy and keeps storage woes to a minimum.
What are you learning or trying this new year?
