Today's Thrifty Thursday post was going to include a tour through some of my favorite thrift stores, but alas, that will have to wait. A heavy snow storm this morning screamed, "Stay home, stay in your pajamas until 2, create with what you have." So, that is exactly what I did and this is what I came up with--a BOHO plant stand.
I started with an embroidery hoop (Are you seeing a theme? Buy the wood embroidery hoops when they are cheap!), four wood dowels from the thrift store, and a 50 cent basket. I used a hoop that the basket fit in without falling through.
The dowels were finished, but unfinished work just as well and are often in the craft or tool section of thrift stores. I marked two inches down on each dowel.
I then hot glued the dowel to the outside of the embroidery hoop. the hot glue is a temporary hold and you need to fix the dowels to the embroidery hoop in a more permanent way.
I chose to use copper wire wrapped around the dowel legs and hoop to secure the two together. You could drill from the inside of the hoop and add a small, flat screw, or you could use twine or ribbon to tie it together.
I knew I need a bottom support to keep the dowel legs sturdy and in place. At first I thought I would use the other part of the embroidery hoop, but because my basket tapers at the bottom, I didn't like that look. Small wood braces or even twigs would work. I chose to use more copper wire. First, I marked 5 inches up from the bottom of the dowel and then put a small line of hot glue on the mark to keep the wire from slipping.
I wrapped the wire around the leg and then around the opposite leg, keeping the legs and equal distance apart.
I twisted the wire once in the middle. The wire works well to really make the BOHO plant stand sturdy.
I decided to paint the basket black. "They" say every room needs a little black to ground it. Plus, I love warm wood with dark colors. This basket came with a plastic liner in it which is perfect for plants. Be sure to paint some of the inside in case it shows. I sanded it just a bit when the paint dried to give it a worn look.
A BOHO plant stand is a great way to add some height to an end table or coffee table.
It also is a nice way to display a plant on the floor, it gives it more of a presence.
So clever! I love it!
