I am becoming a plant lover. Call it a result of old age and an empty nest, but I want all the plants these days. Propagating your own plants is easy and saves money. But, who wants or has space for a bunch of jars sitting around on horizontal spaces cluttering things up? Today's Make it Monday project is an easy, DIY wall plant propagation station. It adds a bit of color and life to any wall.
This is very quick and easy to make. Keep reading for the how-to and to see ideas on how you can change it up to fit your home and design aesthetic. I started with a flat basket, some bottles, copper wire, and green jute.
This was the same basket that I used at Christmas time (HERE) I simply cut the yarn off to reuse since I knew when I made it that is was temporary Christmas art. Thee are lots of other things you could use for a back ground: pegboard in a frame, an old chalkboard with holes drilled in it, a cupboard door or cutting board with holes drilled in it, screen, burlap, or chicken wire stapled on a frame, a back of an old caned chair, anything that you can wire jars to and hang on a wall.
Clean an assortment of jars. There is no glass recycling in my area, but darn I have a tough time throwing glass bottles out. You can use spice jars, canning jars, pop or wine bottles. You do want something that has a wide enough mouth so that the roots won't be damaged when you pull the propagated plants out and also a bottle with a good lip on it for the wire. Play around with different arrangements of the bottles.Make sure to leave room for the leaves at the top of the bottles. I decided to go with four bottles in a line. Using chalk, mark where the necks of the bottles are.
Drill holes if you are using a background that needs it.
Using an 8-10 inch piece of wire. You can use floral wire. I wanted something that was easy enough to twist, but something that would be easy to untwist too to change water out. Put the wire through the basket or background and twist it before you add the bottle.
Add water and the plant cuttings your are hoping to propagate. Be sure to check water weekly and add more as needed. If you need to clean or replace the water, untwist the wire at the front of the bottle and gently remove the plant to clean the bottle and water.
The plant in the tallest jar (a vintage juice jar) is citronella, not weed 😁. I wintered a large citronella plant in my sunroom. I love it for the patio and deck in the summer.
This wall propagation station is perfect hanging between two windows in my sunroom, above my planting area. When you have wall space, a hanging propagating area is a perfect way to add some green and life to a vertical, flat space and it keeps surface areas clear until you are ready to plant.
I hung a little basket above it that I shared last year HERE.
I love this view of our greenhouse and side yard. Spring is springing finally and I am ready for ALL of the green things, both indoors and out.
