I always check out the basket selection at my local thrift stores. I like finding flat, round basket "trays" because I love their natural look and that they add texture and warmth to a wall or propped on a shelf. You can use them as frames or wreath bases or for centerpieces.
I decided to use a few for cross stitch or embroidery "fabric".
This project is fairly easy, super inexpensive, and can be changed or removed after the holidays. I love the simple, natural, kind of boho feel that adds warmth to holiday decor. It is a perfect project to do while watching your favorite Christmas movie (White Christmas and Elf for me!!).
I started by using chalk to plan out my designs.
I used wool yarn. for the more square shaped basket I used a toothpick and masking tape on the end of the yarn as a needle. Yes, there are big plastic needles that would work, but I didn't have one at home. Because the weave was tighter on this basket, the toothpick help to push the thick yarn through the basket weave.
I added a wood bead for a tree topper and simple snowflakes around the tree.
I wanted a true, six sided snowflake. It was a bit of a challenge to get completely straight lines, but adding extra tacking stitched helped the snowflake to look a little more uniform.
Prop the baskets on a shelf, add a little greenery and you have a simple, lovely, natural, boho display that is unique and warm.
If you don't want to stitch on the baskets. you could use white paint and stencil a design on them. This would be a more permanent idea.
After the holidays, you can cut the yarn away (you will only be out a dollar or two on the yarn used), and use the baskets in y our every day decor.
