Thrifty Thursday Boho Spring Vignette

Well, winter let us know that she was certainly not ready to leave this week. We got snow and it was below zero every night, 27 below zero yesterday morning. BUT, I am ready for spring so I decided to bring some into my home with a spring vignette created with thrift store finds.

I used a bit of this and a bit of that to create a happy, interesting, boho, spring vignette.

Make It Monday Boho Beaded Shamrock

Who is ready for spring? As I write this, there is a good 6-8 inches of snow from a storm last night and it is supposed to be below zero for the next four nights--23 below zero tomorrow night. So, yes, I am ready for spring and warmer days. I decided it was time to put away the last of the winter decor and valentine stuff away and start adding a little green and spring, hoping to manifest it. Today's DIY started with a beaded seat cover from the thrift store.

If you ever see these at a thrift store, grab them. This one was $4 and I ended up with hundreds of beads. If you do not have a beaded seat cover, you can of course use any wood beads from a craft store. You do want a smaller size, these were about the size of a fingernail. Cut the seat cover apart.

Similar to the heart I made for Valentine's Day (HERE), I decided to make a lucky shamrock for Saint Patrick's Day.

Thrifty Thursday Bread Box Makeover

Today's (day late thanks to internet issues) Thrifty Thursday is a simple makeover of a metal breadbox.

I hesitated when buying this because it is cheap, made in China decor. Friends, let's do our best to not buy stuff like this brand new from the store. I don't want to offend anyone, but please, let's try not to purchase "fast decor" brand new from the store. Fast decor are items that are mass and rapidly produced, low quality, often made with toxic materials in China that people get rid of in a few years. In the US fast furniture accounts for approximately 9 million tons of waste yearly in landfills. Let's do our best to not promote dollar store crafts, fast furniture and cheap decor buying. Stepping down off the soapbox now.

I am not saying I am perfect and I don't buy some of it, BUT I sure have reduced what I buy new. I do feel a bit better buying it from a thrift store, saving it from the landfill and giving it new life, like this breadbox. 

Modern Bookshelf Made From Pallets

Hubby has been in the mood...to bring home pallets that is. And when they are good pallets (heavy wood, not broken) and when he is willing to take them apart for me, I am a happy builder. I decided to use some of that recently acquired pallet wood,

to make a bookshelf with a modern, boho feel to it.

Thrifty Thursday Modern Funky Minimal Centerpiece

Last week I shared some wood finds from the thrift store. This week I focused on finding metal objects (but, I do look at ALL the things at the thrift store). I found a few, some with great patina. Here are a couple of the items that came home with me: two different sized gold panning pans, a heavy metal container with great patina, and a hammered copper candlestick.

I decide to upcycle the larger, metal, gold panning pan first. I knew it would make a great candle pan for a modern looking, minimal, boho centerpiece. No goldpan handy? Use a cake pan or a round metal tray for a centerpiece.

Make It Monday Wood Block Heart

I decided I needed a bit more Valentine's Day decor for my breezeway porch. It has been pretty darn bare since I put Christmas stuff away mid-January. I wanted to create something with items I had, something simple, and unique. I came up with this heart sign made with Jenga blocks. 

I am sharing LOTS of different ideas on how YOU can make something similar! I dare you to go into any thrift store and not find a Jenga game. This particular one was handmade which is nice because the blocks do not have the Jenga stamp. But, that can be sanded out, or simply ignored. You also could use paint stick ends or shims.

Thrifty Thursday Different Ways to Use Wood Items

In today's Thrifty Thursday post I am sharing some recent wood finds and some ideas on how to use unique thrift store finds, plus tips on what to look for when buying wood items at the thrift store. I feel like I just introduced you to my topic like I might have in 9th grade composition class. 😁 

I recently found and bought these three wood items on the same day at our local thrift store, spending a total of $10 for all three. I always make sure to look at the section that has small, wood items. Using wood decor gives your home a warm and natural, organic touch.

 Some tips when looking at wood objects include: make sure it is real wood--look at edges to check for a veneer, if it is heavier it tends to be real wood, look for warping or water damage, remember scratches can easily be sanded out, gouges not so much.

The wood vase (vessel?) is not old, and was originally sold at Target for $29.99--I got it for $3. The wood carrier (anyone know what this might have been?) is quite old. I can tell it is not a new product based on the big, straight screws holding the feet on, the grain of the wood, and the dowel construction. For some reason it reminds me of something from a church, but that might be because the wood looks like it is from an old pew. I paid $5 for it. The vintage, wood, Scottie dog, napkin holder was homemade and for $2 I thought it was awfully sweet.

Cozy Sunroom and DIY Hanging Lamp

I love creating cozy spots in my home--places to curl up with a cup of coffee or tea to read or peruse Pinterest. And when I can create that space with garage sale purchases and thrift store finds, I love the spot even more. Repurposing, upcycling used items not only is good for our environment, but it gives a space warmth. I would rather use something old than something purchased from the store (and most likely made in China). Vintage, handcrafted, upcycled all give a space some soul. 

Such is the cozy feeling in my sunroom that has been almost entirely furnished and designed with thrift store and garage sale finds. I hanging lamp that I created with oval embroidery hoops and a hanging light kit finished this space with a my favorite funky, boho vibe.
