Anyway, if you have been around my blog for awhile, you know I like a good island.
I have made pallet islands,
Apparently, I like islands. I think it is because they add extra storage and counter space and because they can be used in other places too--craft rooms, entry ways, bathrooms.
So when these shutters that hubby picked up for $1 at a garage sale were starring at me this morning, I knew there was another island in the works.
I looked around the garage a little more and found a stack of drawers and decided one should be the base of the island. This provides great storage.
I attached the shutters to the drawer and then painted it a light blue. I then added a couple pieces of old trim board to the fronts.
A fabulous reclaimed wood top (attached from the bottom using the Kreg jig), some stain over it all, some hooks and wheels and this island was complete.
The shutters provide a fun place for cookbooks or magazines.
I had to show off the pickles I canned yesterday--I can't wait to eat them in a few months.
This island would look well in an entry too,
a place for your purse and keys--
shoes, mittens, and hats in the drawer,
and a place to set your mail.
Yes, islands of all types are a good thing!
This is fabulous Becky! I love it! You are always so creative and make it look so easy. Loving the color as well. Now to find a few shutters of my own.

Oooohhh very cool! Love the cookbooks on the shutter slats and the mittens in the drawer. I guess i would need 2 then... One for the kitchen and one for the entry since i like it so much either way! :)
ReplyDeleteI love them all...but I think this new one is my FAVORITE :)
ReplyDeletejust too fun! don't you love when furniture can move from room to room with grace and style?

I love your blog. It is one of my favorites. I love that you blog frequently & that you do scripture on Sunday. Today's was one of my favorite creations. That island is just too, too cute. Not to mention functional! I just washed a long skinny shutter today. I was thinking of attaching pine boards & making it a shelf but now that I've seen your island idea I just might have to rethink my plans!! By the way, what's the easiest way to paint the slats?
ReplyDeleteI love how you think outside the box, or shall I say drawer! (: Thanks for always inspiring us.
ReplyDeleteI love this island!! Perfect use for the shutters!! I really like it in the foyer for keys/purses and shoes!

Way cool!! Love the reusing of the old shutters and drawer!! Your creations amaze me!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could happen upon all the cool stuff that you guys come upon for nothing or shutters for $1! I never get that lucky. And around here, the antique shops want $30 for shutters. This is gorgeous!! LOVE IT!! XD
ReplyDeleteoh so cute,, love shutters and that top looks great. I think i like the entryway look the best.,, If only my entryway were big enough.
ReplyDeleteA small island that I could roll around was what I had in mind last year when I told my husband I wanted one cause I have no counter space. What I got instead was a huge/massive stationary island that replaced the table.. LOL. But I do love it.
another hit out of the ballpark becky! Love the shutter island. :)
ReplyDeletehow did you attach the wheels to the shutters? I have some laying around, and a few drawers here and there-- this might be a good project for 'em.
ohhh, pinned!

ReplyDeleteLOve, love this! I have some shutters in my shop that have been staring at me for a month, pretty sure I have some drawers or maybe a crate would work as the base..hmmm. Thanks for the inspiration. Just got my kreg jig courtesy of UPS yesterday..now if I can figure out how to use it.
ReplyDeleteI love it!! What color of stain did you use for the top?
ReplyDeleteI love this one...and wish I weren't 1800 miles away so it could be mine. Dangit. Moving is so inconvenient. :) Guess Jay is just gonna have to make one for me. Your pickles look lovely, too. Love you, friend.

ReplyDeleteHi thanks for the great idea I just saved 16 big shutters that were landfill bound today!!! Now I know what to do with them :)
ReplyDeleteVery well said, Shutters, blinds, awnings are now a days used in many homes, offices, clubs etc not only to protect it from bad weather but it also creates an ambience effect to the interior.
ReplyDeleteInterior Wood Shutters
I love shutters because they are so versatile. We've got some at our cottage, in front of our furnace and hot water heater to help hide them. Now I'm looking for some to use as accents in our house. Anxious to see this when you're finished.

Wow! Great collection. Love how you upcycled the shutters.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing what you did with the shutters. The only reason I rolled my eyes was because shutters are hard to paint. You did a great job on them..I did have some white blinds discolor slightly from leaving in the sun so best dry them in the shade.
