I am loving the wood cone trees I am seeing everywhere. They are simple and boho and will look great in a variety of Christmas vignettes. BUT, at $10-$50 a tree, creating a cute display with them could easily cost $100+. I decided I could make something that looked very similar and the best part, I could do it for about $5.
They are not perfect and there are a few things I would do differently (I will share those thoughts too), but grouped together with greenery and lights, and snow, they make an awfully cute Christmas vignette.
I started with wood veneer 8.5" x 11" craft paper and some cardstock to make a pattern. I bought this at the craft store. It does have a sticky back.

You can buy similar wood veneer HERE.
I made a pattern on cardstock. The 4.5" is referring from the corner to the point, as is the 4 3/4" on the small tree.
After cutting out the cone patterns, I realized I could get 3 trees on one sheet of veneer.
At first I was trying to roll the cones with taking off the paper for the adhesive backing. It was starting to peel off as I rolled it so I decided to stick it to printer paper.
I rolled the cones and hot glued them. This did take some work and if I make any more, I will splurge on Styrofoam cones or make cereal box cardboard cones first to attach the wood veneer to. If it gets worked too much, the veneer can start to split. The backs are not beautiful so you do not want to use these cone trees in a centerpiece or somewhere that you can see all the way around them, but look great on a shelf or a spot against a wall.
To bring out the wood grain, I used Wise Owl Furniture Salve. I also used it on the old box I [ut the trees in. You can get it from my friend TINA, HERE.
I put the trees in a wonderful, very old, carved box I got from the thrift store.
I added some greenery from a $3 Target Spot wreath that I took apart, fairy lights, and fake snow.
Placed on a side table with an almost 100 year old copy of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, it makes a simple, sweet display on a budget.

Very cute. I would love a close up pic of the 100 year old book! Does it have illustrations inside?
