Pallet Board Thunderbird

I have had a thunderbird on my brain ever since by daughter bought a piece of jewelry with a thunderbird.
So, I decided to make one from pallet wood.

make a thunderbird or phoenix from pallet boards

The thunderbird is legendary bird to many native peoples and cultures.  It often symbolizes power and strength and transformation. It is also called a phoenix, which is said to rise from the ashes. It is a powerful symbol.

I used one wider (5 1/2") pallet board for the middle body part and smaller 3 1/2" pallet boards for the wings.

I sketched the body shape on the board and cut it out with a jigsaw.  I then traced the angle of the body on the shortest wing pieces.  My wing pieces were 6", 8" and 10" long. I joined them together with two strips of wood on the back.

I painted the body yellow and then red and used greens and blues on the wings.  I played with the paint, scraping some color off and adding more.

I then sanded it all and used Early American Minwax stain over the top.  It is sitting on a shelf here, but is made to hang and definitely adds a boho, funky feel to the home.

  1. The phoenix is a symbol highly used by the occult/luciferians.

    1. I didn't know that. I have always seen it in Native American cultures and like the idea of rebirth and strength that I have seen it symbolize.
