Signs, signs, signs--they have been all the rage for quite awhile now. And honestly, I am over the ones that have a saying on them. But, I am still loving signs that look like vintage advertising signs like this Fresh Flowers sign I just made.

My goal was to have it look like it could have been hanging on a roadside stand for years, and had been repainted every few years.

To achieve this chippy, vintage paint look I applied the paint to a piece of plywood with blocks of wood. Simply dip the wood in paint and "spread" it on the wood, layering it. Let it dry between layers. I used dark brown, red, yellow, and aqua.

I did some sanding, especially on the edges. I then stained everything with dark walnut. I wanted it a little darker so the white letters would stand out.

I stenciled the letters and hand-painted the shadow. I lightly sanded the letters when the paint was dry and finished the whole thing with a clear coat.

I love playing with paint and love the end results.
Love your sign and the colors are great! Did you use a stencil for the letters or how did you do them? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes, I stenciled the letters and then hand-painted the shadow.
DeleteThis turned out so great, Becky! I love the idea of using the wood block to layer paint...wonderful look. And the idea to shadow the stencilling gives it a hand painted look! I want to try your techniques! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove this! Great job. You have inspired me to try making one for my home. Thanks for sharing!
