Thrift Store Summer Decor Pinwheels

Today I am sharing more summer thrift store decor ideas for you home that including an easy project.

Old books are a dime a dozen (okay, more like a buck each) at thrift stores. Every time I show a project made with old books, someone gets upset. If that is you, look away. BUT, most old books are not worth anything. Thrift stores throw out tons of old books. They are good for reading, sometimes, but many do not get read. The books I used were an adorable 1955 Golden Book with several ripped and missing pages, a new reproduction Dick and Jane book, and a children's book with no cover.

The number of pages you need for each pinwheel depends on which way you fold them and how big they are, but each takes approximately eight pages. I chose pages that had a lot of red and blue on them. The smallest pinwheel was made with the Dick and Jane pages cut in half to make it smaller. Accordion fold the pages, making each fold about an inch wide.

Hot glue the folded pages together, being sure to match up what will be the outside edges of the folded pages.

Hot glue between the folds at the center. Hold as glue dries--be cautious to not burn yourself.

Flip and glue the same way on the other side.  Glue the pinwheel open.

I punched out some cardstock circles to glue on the middles. You can just cut out circles too. Hole punch on the outer edge and add a string to hang. These are cute hanging in windows, on coat hooks, from stair banisters, across the corner of pictures. How cute would a bunch of smaller ones be on a Christmas tree at Christmas time?

I hung mine on a coat hook in my entryway. This entryway really doesn't get used, but it is fun to decorate.  (BTW, directions to make this coat hook can be found in my second book, Wood Pallet Wonders found HERE.) Almost everything else in the entry is from a garage sale or thrift store. The small red chair doesn't really have a place, so I decided to hang it for color.

Old books that I change out seasonally, add a perfect pop of color.

If you are new here, you may not know that I live in a 1932 schoolhouse so I am always looking for and collecting old school items.

Some thrift store globes and a metal USA map from the thrift store sit on one end of the shelf. The candlestick is from the thrift store too.
A denim shirt and red t-shirt scarf add more patriotic color and a piece of red, white, and blue scrapbook paper gives my vintage Tom Thumb typewriter a little color.
I believe decor is meant to be fun and it should make you smile and these festive touches do just that.

  1. such a cute space to decorate. I work at a thrift store. I'm glad to see books being used no matter their purpose!
