The space above my kitchen cupboards has been calling for SOMETHING for a few years now, but I have not been sure what. I am a little weird about completely decorating above cupboards. I never want it to feel like a store display, don't want fake plants that get greasy and dusty, never wanted anything too small.
Thus, it has stayed plain, empty, lonely, sad.
(See how I painted my cabinets HERE.)
I thought I would put pallet wood on the wall, but for some reason, haven't. And then this past week, I decided I wanted tin up there instead.
Luckily, I have a nice stash of old, corrugated tin from a small shed that hubby helped a friend take down. A free weekend meant that it was a perfect time for a home project. We started by cutting the tin to the proper length. We recently bought a metal shear or cutter that makes cutting the metal so much easier.

I used a brush on poly (my favorite kind HERE) to clear coat the metal.
Hubby got out his fancy ladder (we have 12 foot ceilings) to install the tin. Let me tell you, I am convinced the way to a man's heart is a nice ladder. (BUY HERE). He put just one screw through the top of the tin and two at the bottom.
We then added a trim board across the top. I added a little decor--a picture of the neighbor's cows that I blew up at Staples and decoupaged on an old canvas picture I no longer liked, and an awesome, old toolbox from my workshop.
On the other corner I added an asparagus crate from Stockton, CA--where I lived as a kid, my recently made flour tin ( see that post HERE), and a jug.
Yesterday I purchased (the advantages or pitfalls of working at an antique place) a tall wool barrel to add to the right of the crate.
I love the texture and cozy feel the tin wall created and am so happy we did it. Oh, and all told the project only took four hours from our free weekend.
It looks amazing, Becky! Really a fun way to accentuate your nice high ceilings! And the right tools and ladder make the job so much easier! Great project!
ReplyDeleteSo clever! Would have never thought of tin myself. I have been having the same dilemma recently. I was thinking wallpaper, maybe William Morris since my kitchen cabinets are dark green.
