Apple Quilt Square

I have not been in the workshop for over a month, but I finally played in there over the weekend and came up with a fun, fall sign.

make a fall sign out of pallet wood
I started with 3 1/2" wide pallet boards that I cut into squares. I cut 25 squares.

I then pieced them together, cutting four in half diagonally for the "rounded" edges of the apple.

I cut the stem square into 3 pieces. I used a bandsaw to cut the leaf from two of the squares.

After I had all of the pieces cut, I glued them to a piece of plywood.

When the glue was dry, I used the nail gun to secure the pieces, nailing from the back of the plywood. I go a little nuts doing this--just nail the heck out of it. I then trimmed the extra plywood off and sanded the quilt square.

I painted the apple, When it was dry, I sanded it and then stained it all.
use reclaimed wood to make a rustic frame
I used 1" x 2" reclaimed barnwood pieces for the frame. I cut and stained them darker before attaching them to the apple square with screws.

The full row of squares at the bottom of the sign looked out of balance so I decided to hand letter APPLES 15 cents ( I can't figure out here to get a cents sign) on the bottom.

Wood quilting is fun and an apple sign is perfect for fall and back to school.

  3. Hi Becky. I hope you get this message. They haven't been going through lately. I love the apple sign. I have 3 apple pictures that my son drew for me with pastel pencils. I framed them in some cute little white frames. BTW, on my phone if you hold your finger down on the $ sign the ¢ sign pops up. Hope that helps.

    1. I wish I knew why they weren't going through. I will need to try and edit post on phone. There is an alt key too, but I couldn't figure it out. I bet your apple drawings are fantastic and a sweet gift from your son.
