When I spied an old, metal hose reel at a new, local thrift store, I knew I could find a way to use it somewhere. And for only $5, it definitely needed to come home with me.
It took about 5 minutes to decide where it's new home was going to be--on the back porch wall between the back door and kitchen window. And while I like it as is, I came up with lots of fun, different ways to use it.
It makes a great bottle holder. I wouldn't leave the bottles out there all of the time, but the hose reel makes a unique way to hold favorite wine and liquor bottles when entertaining outdoors. Set up a table underneath and you have an awesome back porch bar spot.
The hose reel makes a unique display for found, natural objects. This will make it easy to change things up seasonally.
Use it as a towel holder, drying spot after a summer swim. It would need to be sprayed with clear spray before putting wet towels on it to prevent rust.
Lanterns and citronella candles placed on the hose reel will cozy up the back porch on summer nights.
The hose reel makes a great spot to hold small garden tools, gloves, scissors for snipping herbs, and a towel for drying hands.
A flowering plant in a soft, plastic container, wrapped in burlap or and old towel turns the hose reel into a wonderful wall planter. I would wire the planter to the middle of the reel to secure it.
The lesson here is if something speaks to you, get it, you will find a place for it. Think of different ways to use the item, play, be creative.
I never would have thought of these ideas!
