Heavy Metal Thrifty Thursday Finds

Heavy Metal Thrifty Thursday Finds
It's been a hot minute since I have posted--life in the spring is always busy.
Heavy Metal Thrifty Thursday Finds
I haven't done much thrifting recently, but did find a few fun things this week. Metal seems to be what my eyes have been drawn to and I found some treasures I am loving.

When finding things that make my heart beat a little faster, I try to ask myself, how will I use this, where will it go? I try to think out of the box. When I was teacher I would do a creative thinking exercise with my students, showing them an object and giving them a time limit to think up as many varied and unusual uses for the object as they could. I play the same game with some of my thrift store finds.

The metal ware tray is brass and I think it is vintage. It is well made and large. I have a couple ideas for it. I may wire it to a wood, folding, camp stool base to make a side table. It would look great hanging on a wall with a picture propped in it. It would work great as a plant or herb tray or a coffee table tray.

An 1897 patent Champion cast iron corkscrew was a good score. It is missing its wood handle and the clamps meant to hold the bottle. The opener works much like the current rabbit openers. It has the clamp to attach it to a counter. It will need a good cleaning and some WD40, but I think it will be a fun decorative item attached to a shelf in my bar area.

This is a vintage paint roller handle. It sure doesn't feel vey comfortable to hold for a long time. I could clip a poster or photo to it. I plan to hang it by my laundry room sink for a towel holder.

An embossed tin box is not old and not made really well, but I liked it. I think I will age it or paint it and plant in it. But, it would be cute closed on the back of a toilet for essentials, or on a kitchen counter holding oil and spices. It would make a good photo box for a coffee table or a remote parking spot in the family room.

Remember some important thrifting rules: if you keep going back to the item, you probably need it, think of new and usual uses for items--turn the item upside down, etc. to see it differently, don't buy it if it is going to sit in a storage box for years. What have you found recently at a thrift store?
