Last week I headed back to Montana to help the youngest move out of the dorms and into her first rental home (where I painted the cabinets), and then I got some bonding time with my precious 6 week old grandson. On the way home I decided to check out a few of the small town thrift stores along the way. I was not disappointed.
A metal hose holder for $1 was a must since I already had a vintage, metal hose reel on my back porch (SEE HERE). I wasn't sure how I was going to use it until I spied a rattan lantern in a box that was just coming in. For $2 I knew it needed to come home with me too. I am guessing this was originally from Pier One or World Market--it is fairly heavy duty and well made.
I hung the hose holder on the back porch above a metal table that I picked up at a garage sale a few years ago. I spray painted it navy blue to tie in with my back porch color scheme.
I wanted the lantern hung in the inside corner of the back porch where it will be better protected from wind. a citronella candle smells good and helps keep the bugs away.
The love seat on this porch wall was purchased from a Facebook garage sale site right before we moved last year. It came with a very long couch that my son has. It is mid-century design, made by the Howard Furniture company in the late sixties, early seventies. I have seen the set, with a chair (which I do not have) for sale for $12,000. I have seen the loveseat alone for sale for $3000. I paid $50 for the couch and loveseat and although I questioned my sanity in buying furniture right before I was moving, I was glad I did. I recovered it with outdoor fabric I bought at JoAnn's. I left an overlapped opening in the back so I can remove the cushion to wash the cover. However, let me tell you, I had to tie up the bottom cushion into a tight roll to get it into the cover. I clipped the strings I tied it with once it was in there (after working up quite the sweat!) The pillow fabric is from Wal-Mart and from a thrift store curtain panel. The love seat is super comfortable and it has a great view.
On the other side sits the metal stool I showed a few weeks ago (HERE).
The wood sunflower or sunshine is another thrift store find. It was a whopping $8 and knowing all of the work it took someone to cut out two layers of petals (or sun rays), I thought $8 was a bargain. I shined it up a bit with my favorite wood product, Wise Owl's Furniture Salve (you can get it from my friend HERE).
Now that it is warming up nicely, the back porch is my favorite spot for morning coffee, afternoon reading and kombucha,
or an evening cocktail by lantern candlelight. I love that it really is an extended room and living space and that it came together primarily with thrift store and garage sale finds.
What a lovely sitting area! The love seat was a great find and I love the fabrics you chose.
