How to Create a Simple Wreath for Fall and Winter

Today, we are going to start with a little history lesson on wreaths because I was curious so I did some research. Wreaths date back to the Persian Empire where they were used a sign of power and authority when they were worn on the head. Over time, wreaths were hung on doors to represent victory in Rome. Later, believers hung wreaths as a symbol of everlasting life and as a sign that Christ was welcomed in their home. Today, wreaths are generally used as welcome to guests and as a household decoration. And while wreaths were typically made from greenery, today we use a plethora of items and objects to create unique, decorative wreaths.

I started with some wooden embroidery hoops in different sizes that I picked up at the thrift store.

I had a spot on my wall where I knew I wanted to hang this and played with a few different layouts

before I found one I liked.

Using twine, I tied the embroidery hoops together where they touched, leaving the strings long in the places where I was planning on tying my foraged and found natural objects to.

I started with a few branches with leaves that have turned.

I added some rosehips I found on a walk. I got these last week and the leaves shriveled rather than turning brown, so I removed the leaves and only used the bare branches with the rosehips. (I think I am going to go collect a bucket full of these to string for Christmas.)

I added a few more branches and some pinecones, all tied on with the twine or jute.

I thought I was going to put this round basket lid away and hang the wreath in its place, but I liked the wreath nestled in it instead. A painting by daughter in fall colors completes the autumn look.

I tied different lengths of twine together in the middle and tied them to the wreath.

I will remove the rest of the leaves and fall foliage when I am ready to decorate for winter. I will add more pinecones and some pine branches, maybe a red ribbon.

The possibilities really are endless with this simple wreath. Use more hoops or change the layout of them for a different feel, add found objects from where you live--cotton stems, driftwood, twigs from your favorite tree, dried flowers from your yard.  Play, create, and personalize the wreath.
