How to Create a Simple Winter Centerpiece

I love creating simple centerpieces and vignettes.

For winter I knew I wanted a little green and simple, white candles. Living in a wetter climate means that the woods are full of plenty of moss and so I decided I would gather a bit for a centerpiece. I also gathered a few other supplies--a glass plate for water, a small glass dessert stand, candles and canning jar rings.

I built my centerpiece on the same silver tray I have been using for my fall and Christmas centerpiece. I added water to the glass plate and propped up the candles and the small stand on canning jar rings.

I placed a stick with moss on it across the tray.

And , then I tucked the moss around everything. I three different types of moss. If you don't have moss available in the outdoors, you can get it at nurseries and at craft stores.

I added a small chunk of moss-covered wood placed upright and a twig with lichen on it.

I did let the moss sit in a box in the garage for a few days, hoping any critters might crawl out. I am hoping there aren't any, but I am not squeamish so a bug or two won't be a shock.
I love the green and the simplicity of this winter centerpiece.

Tips for creating a centerpiece:
1.  Place your centerpiece on a tray or a chunk of wood or a large book--something you can easily take off the table when needed.
2.  Add heights with overturned small canning jars, small books, stacked saucers.
3. Have a front to the centerpiece, but make sure the centerpiece is interesting on all sides.
4.  Add natural elements--moss, leaves, branches, twigs, rocks, shells, pinecones, etc.
5. Add light--candles or twinkle lights.
6. Remember the rule of odd numbers--place candles or other objects in a loose triangle.
