Reclaimed Wood Headboard and Moon Sign for a Rustic Boho Bedroom

When you buy a brand new home, you have a blank canvas to play with. It is fun and a bit intimidating to inject your own personal style to create a cozy space out of a builder basic home.

A LARGE master bedroom means a lot of space to work with. I started with knowing that I wanted a dark, navy blue wall to cozy up the space a bit. I thought painting the wall three days before Christmas would be fun, so I did. The color is called Nocturne Blue (quite appropriate name for the bedroom) and it is a Behr paint.

The headboard was actually one of the first Covid lockdown projects from last March. I had planned on using it in our Montana home, but when it looked like we were going to be moving, I never put it up. Originally I was going to add more to it on the sides for some built in night stands, but decided against that here in our new home.

I used pieces of all different types of wood--walnut, hickory, pine, cherry. I left the wood it's natural color and simply used a protective clear coat over them. The headboard is hung on the wall with French cleats. A French cleat is a board cut in half diagonally on a table saw. One half goes on the heavy item and one on the wall. You can also make interlocking L shaped cleats. This is a great project for scrap wood. Check out your local Habitat for Humanity for random scrap wood pieces.
Moon Phase Sign
I have been loving the various moon phase signs I have been seeing and knew I wanted one for the bedroom.  I started with a thrift store sign because I wanted a smooth sign with a nice edge rather than a rustic piece of wood. Signs are a dime a dozen, okay maybe more like $2 a sign, at thrift stores right now. Folks are getting over all of the wordy signs that were oh, so hot four or five years ago so they are plentiful at thrift stores. They are a great resource for a something new to you sign.

I painted it the same blue color as the wall. I then found the middle and traced a lid to make a circle. I added three more circles on both sides of the middle circle. Use chalk for tracing on dark colored paint. I used the lid to trace the curved parts of the moon phases.
Paint a Moon Phases Sign
I grabbed a wood scrap from the firewood pile and used it to paint the moon phases.  This gives the moons great texture.

I hung the sign on the headboard to break up the wood a bit.

I knew I wanted navy blue and greige in my bedroom. I wasn't sure what I wanted for an accent color. I hung this picture of a sunset that I had taken that my mom made into a canvas for me. It inspired me to add a dusty orange. Orange and blue are complementary colors and orange is a happy, warm color. Plus, I liked it with the warm wood headboard.

The bedding is from Target, it the Nate Berkus line, Project 62. It is the color that is on the shams, the bright sunlight coming through the window makes the comforter looks faded, but it isn't.
