Simple Wood Sign for July

Baby, it's hot out there! We are in the middle of record breaking heat here in the northwest and I am trying to stay cool (without an AC). Last night hubby and plopped the lawn chairs in the middle of the sprinkler, made a cold cocktail, and sat for an hour. And it isn't even July yet!! But, it will be tomorrow and I decided I better get SOME kind of fourth of July decor on my front porch.
Wood Sign that is Not red, white, and blue
When you have a bright yellow door and your everyday summer porch decor is in bright yellows, greens, and oranges, adding red, white, and blue is just a bit much, even for this color loving girl.

So, I decided to create a simple wood and white sign that wouldn't clash with everything else.

I started by making a sign blank from three cedar boards leftover from a fence we put up in the fall. I knew I needed something long and narrow. I stained it with Special Walnut stain and then clear-coated it before painting.

I decided I wanted the word freedom and some stars and stripes. I hand lettered freedom and the stars. I wanted larger and more stars at the top, with smaller fewer stars further down. As I painted, I decided to eliminate the stripes and only paint stars for a cleaner, more simpler look.

The simplified sign for the Fourth of July is a nice addition to my colorful porch.

Now, for some cooler weather so I can actually enjoy sitting on the porch.
