I while back I shared this thrift store chair on my Instagram and Facebook, asking readers to help pick a fabric to recover it. I gave them four choices. I had sanded the vintage chair to remove the rough, aged varnish and finished it with a clear coat.
And while I agreed with the winner of the survey, I still wasn't thrilled with any of the choices so I sat the chair in the laundry room to wait for new inspiration. And that inspiration came this week with a Pier One curtain panel from the thrift store. (I found this vintage dish, Hall pottery??, the same day and liked it with the fabric.)
So today's thrifting tip is, always look at the ALL of the linens for fabric sources--tablecloths, curtains, sheets, scarves. If it can be washed and you love it, get it! The fabric can be used in so many places. I loved the vibrant colors and the eclectic boho pattern--summer sofa pillows are next with this fabric. But, first the chair:
Everything you see here is from the thrift store--the table that won't always look like this, the 1930's lamp that works, the planter, the wall decor, the yellow dish.
Remove the seat. I typically leave the original seat cover on there unless it is super nasty and stinky. Sometimes I add more quilt batting, in this case I did not. Cut the fabric 2-3 inches larger on all sides of the set bottom. If you have enough fabric, don't skimp, but don't cut some much extra that it is bulky and in the way.
Using a staple gun, staple the corners first. My staples were longer than they needed to be, that is okay. I staple one corner and then the corner diagonally across from the stapled corner.
Next staple the middle of each side. After the middle staple, I stretch the fabric tight and smooth and staple at the corners again. Then I continue the process, stapling the middle and then the new middles on each side. I fold the fabric under so there is not an exposed raw edge.
Screw the seat back onto the chair. I love how the carved wood on the chair back looks like it matches the fabric.
This cute chair will probably end up for sale. I do love keeping extra chairs nearby in case we need a seat for a dinner guest.
