Today's Make it Monday project couldn't be easier. It only takes a couple supplies, an old leather belt, some rope or jute or macrame cord,
and 30 minutes or less to create a fantastic, sturdy plant hanger.
I definitely will be making more. Keep reading to see the quick how to on this fun and useful project.
I started with this old, colorful, leather belt and some thick jute. A regular leather belt works great too.
I cut the ends off of the belt and then cut it in half. My two belt pieces were about 14" long each. You can go bigger or smaller depending on the size of pot that you will be using. Because this belt is little pieces woven together with leather cord, I had to tie off the cord where I cut the belt.
If you are using a regular belt, you won't have to do this step. You could cut the ends on a regular belt into a tapered shape. I then threaded a yard of jute through each end of the two belt pieces. If you use a regular leather drill two holes in each belt piece end. You could use a leather punch as well if you have one. if you are drilling or punching holes, you probably want to use a thinner jute, perhaps doubled up.
Find the middle of each leather piece and drill one hole in the middle spot. I didn't drill a hole because of the type of belt I used. Using an inch long brad, join the two leather pieces together.
Bring the jute or cording together at the top and tie a knot. If you have long enough jute strings, you can tie a loop knot too. I didn't, but this hangs up wonderfully still by simply hooking the knot with the cup hook I installed above out library window.
This is such an easy project and there a lot of ways you can personalize it. Use a sparkly belt, or a black leather belt, colored jute or macramé cord. Add a tassel tot he bottom, wood beads to the cording. And of course, the plant pot and type of plant you hang will add its own personality. I call this plant Punky and I've had her a few years.
