More Books and Reading This Year

easy ways to get more out of life this year

One of my goals this year was to read more books this year.

With this library of mine, it doesn't even seem like that should have to be a goal.  But, sadly it is because I don't read nearly as much as I want to or should.

When I was a kid I was an avid reader, I loved going to the library and the day of the week that the book mobile would come to our neighborhood was my favorite day of the week.

But, as I got older and as electronics and social media have become more prevalent, my reading time has dwindled. Couple that with my need of reading glasses, which is just plain annoying, and reading for pleasure has really become something I do not do enough of anymore. I am determined to change that this year.

One of my dear friends who is an avid reader has helped spur me on by her goal of reading a chapter a day out of a non-fiction book.  I have been fairly good about doing that this winter--reading Ann Voskamp and Brene Brown.  But, I definitely need to read more and want to read ore fiction.

As a former teacher, I KNOW reading can change lives and make a huge, positive difference in what we know.  When I taught school we would have DEAR times most days--time when we dropped everything and read.  I am going to institute those at home after dinner--30 minutes of reading before homework, workshop time, TV, practice, etc.  I know it won't happen every night, but even three days a week will be an improvement.

I am also going to carry a book with me in the car so I have one wherever I go.  We are coming up to travelling volleyball season which means lots of down time between games which can be spent reading.

Do you need more books and more reading time in your life?  Which ideas can you incorporate in your life to read more?

  1. I read constantly. And it's not unusual for me to have 2 or 3 different books going at the same time. I have books piled everywhere. I like to download books onto my i pad too because I take it with me everywhere.

    LOVE your library.

  3. The library was my happy place from clear back to my elementary school years. In Kentucky, the library I went to had story time combined with a puppet show. My favorite books were the Beezus & Ramona series. I read every book in the series multiple times. Later, as I got into my teen years I would ride my bike to the library in California where we now lived & curl up in the private listening cubicles with books & magazines. It was heaven to me.
