Old Tin Glory

We (we, meaning my husband, who did the work) recently took some old, corrugated tin off the roof of a shed. I used some on a potting bench and a hall tree. I had a smaller, leftover piece.

I knew it would make a perfect flag.

I painted it all white first, and then added the red stripes, the blue square and stars.

I used shipping tape to distress it. To do this, simply use the tape to rip off some of the paint when the paint is just barely dry.

I finished it all with a clear coat. It is easy to hang by drilling through the holes in the tin.

  1. This is really great. I love how easy it is to do and love the distressed look. What type of paint did you use and did you have to prepare the tin (other than clean it of course) before applying the paint (rough it with sandpaper or clean it with something special to allow the paint to adhere better)? I have some pieces of old tin as well and would love to do my Texas flag on one. Thanks for posting.

    1. I used craft paint for the red and blue. The white I used was an outdoor porch paint. I did wipe the metal down with white vinegar to get any dust off. But, the porch paint adheres well to the metal.

  2. So cool. Love it. How did you do the stars - freehand or did you use a stencil?
