Thrifty Thursday DIY Hanging Light

Last week I shared my recent thrift store finds including this blue enamel burner. I wasn't sure what it was when I found it at a local thrift store, but I loved the blue enamel and the little rusty hinged window and that it was old.

Honestly, I still am not sure what it is--I think a pipe for a small, portable kerosene heater, but it didn't take me long to decide what I wanted to do with it. I have been needing lamps and lights in my family room. We have overhead lighting, dimmable cans, but I prefer the warmth of lamps to overhead lighting (yes mom, I got this from you). I knew this enamel burner would make a great hanging light.

I had a light "kit" with a cloth cord (similar to this one HERE) that I secured by wrapping the cord around a stick that I put in the top of the enamel pipe. I also used some wire wrapped around the light neck and attached to the little holes in the bottom of the enamel burner.

The wire helped the light to hang in the middle. I added an Edison bulb I had and I do want the bulb sticking out a bit, but I think I will get a rounder bulb rather than this elongated one.

To hang the light, I used a white coat hook screwed into the ceiling. I wrapped the cord around it and then swooped the cord to the wall and secured it with a small bent nail.

The light gives this corner in my family room some lovely, cozy light.

Things YOU can look for at the thrift store to make into a hanging light:
baskets, metal trash can, wire baskets and bowls, outdoor lanterns, wood bowls, small garden fencing, candle sticks. A little creative thinking and ingenuity can lead to fantastic, one of a kind lighting to warm up your spaces.

  1. I don't think I would have thought of doing this in a million years. It's pretty cool though.
