Blog Swappin' With Becca

It's a thrill to be here today hanging out with all of you Becky fans! I have loved getting to know Becky more and can see what all of you adore her!

I'm Becca form over at Blue Cricket Design and I too have a love for being creative! I love to sew, design, decorate, cook, refinish, thrift shop and anything else that lets me express myself! It's an adventure for sure and I've had fun recording it all and sharing it with others!

I'd love to share with you a fun project I did! This is pretty typical! I'll find something that I think I just can't live without but know that I can create a version of it for a fraction of the cost! So I often make a mental note and get to work! I loved how this project turned out! ENJOY!
I fell in love with a necklace at Anthropology but , of course,
like always when I closed my eyes, held my breath and made a
wish that the price would be slashed with a red marker and
hugely reduced, reality hit me straight upside my head when
$38

stared back at me!

No surprise!!! It was Anthropology!!!

Of course the first thing that popped into my head was a little saying I often hear...yes I hear voices in my head....
"I can make that!!!"

Funny how I walk around the world calculating the steps, material and cost saving
advantages of making things myself!
So off to the fabric store I go shopping for all we'll need to replicate this beauty...

Here's my version of the "Oh so Lovely" Anthro must have...

So who's ready to save 90% and custom make a little gem like this?!!!?!

First things first! Go get yourself some Chiffon!Chiffon comes in every color and is super cheap especially when you need so little. I buy 1/4 of a yard and have enough
to make three necklaces.

You will also need 1 1/4 yard of coordinating or matching ribbon, matching thread,
beads for the center and felt.

First cut fabric squares about 2 - 2.25"

round the corners like this. Each flower will require 6 of these.

Fold a piece in half, and then in half once again.

Using matching thread, sew the folded petal onto a cut piece of felt, about the size of a quarter.

Repeat that step two more times 'till it looks like this...notice the spacing.

Add the final three petals placing them on top of the open spacing.
Now you have all your petals in place!

Sew on a bead in the center! I found a wonderful 1 lb. bad of mixed beads,
a random collection, for less then $5 at Joanns craft store!

(Once you have your flower complete feel free to shape the flower by cutting and trimming the petals to make it perfect!)

Repeat to make the remaining flowers. Each level of flower needs to be made smaller so just start off with smaller squares of fabric or trim each completed flower to a smaller size.

Find the center of your ribbon and use a hot glue gun to create and secure a center.

Start by gluing the largest flower onto the very center of the ribbon. Continue gluing on the remaining flowers and be aware of the spacing and size of each flower you are gluing on. Be sure to burn the ends of your ribbon with a match to keep it from fraying.

Te Da!!!

A beautiful necklace! This project is easy peesy but does take time!! I can get one done in about an hour if I don't have kids at my feet!

Thanks for making me feel welcomed everyone! I'd love for all of you to come and see what else I've been up to over on Blue Cricket Design! And be sure to come and link your very own creations on my Linking Party every Wednesday!

Thanks Becky!!!!! Happy Creating!

  7. And I've been watching for a red slash on the one at Anthro...but even at 50% I shouldn't indulge. I think I'm off to find some chiffon and make one myself. Thanks for the great tutorial!

  9. Becca, I enjoyed your guest post. I saw a necklace at Urban Outfitters, and because of your blog I decided I, too, can adapt an idea from something I love that is too expensive to buy. This cute necklace had a pendant made of a safety pin. I CAN MAKE THAT!
