When someone says they have some free wood they are getting rid of and ask if you want any, the answer is always (almost anyway) YES!

I am not sure what this wood was originally--1" x 4" s that I thought were maybe fence boards, but they are full of brad nails.

My first project with the boards was a rustic, ladder shelf.

I started with four 5'6" boards for the sides of the "ladders". I cut eight 11" long boards for the rungs. I pre-drilled the rungs on the underside with a countersink bit. I cut twelve boards 50" long for the shelves.

I sanded and stained everything before assembling it.

I then made the ladder sides, using 1 5/8" screws and being careful to measure properly so they were the same.

I then attached three boards to each rung to make the shelf.

To complete the shelf, I added an X , made with two reclaimed boards. This really helps to make the shelf sturdy. I love the rustic feel to the shelf that can easily be dressed up with accessories.
